This month we are focusing on making upgrades to our habits to level up our wellness, fitness … and our lives!
I have some great news for you about how you can upgrade your metabolism – the number of calories you burn over the course of a day – that has absolutely nothing to do with your diet or your workouts.
But first here’s a little background! Your body burns calories to fuel many things over the course of the day:
- Your Basal Metabolism. These are the calories your body burns to power your organs and physiological functions. This accounts for between 60% and 75% of your daily calorie expenditure. (Interesting fact: your liver, brain and skeletal muscle are the top 3 calorie burners.)
- Digesting Your Food. About 10% of your daily calorie intake goes to digest your food! This includes breaking it down, converting it into energy, and/or going through the process of storing it as fat if it’s not immediately used.
- Physical Activity. This category of calorie burn is broken into two groups – calories you burn while you’re exercising (and directly after), and calories you burn while you’re doing other things like walking around, doing chores, engaging in hobbies, etc. Physical activity accounts for between 15% to 30% of your total daily energy expenditure.
It’s that very last category – the calories you burn while you’re NOT working out – are the calories that I’m talking about today.
That’s called non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) and it can make a HUGE difference in maintaining and/or losing weight.
That’s because any “extra” activity you do during the day (taking a shower, walking up the stairs, washing the dishes, doing laundry, playing with kids/pets, etc.) vs. sitting down can add up to hundreds of extra calories burned over the course of the day.
Just how many calories you burn depends on how much you weigh and how hard you are working…
Doing household chores burns between 150-300 calories an hour, while working in the yard can burn 200 to 600 depending on whether you’re weeding, raking, chopping down trees, etc.
Compare that spending time parked on the couch watching TV: you burn 70 calories an hour sitting, and just 45 calories an hour lying down.
But here’s the amazing part …
You have an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase that helps your body turn stored fat into energy.
When you’re not very active, you have less of it in your body – but staying active during the day will help keep your levels up.
So basically: If you want to keep your metabolism up, move more!
If you sit all day for work- this is incredibly important! It’s also especially important if you’ve found yourself slipping into a “doing less” rut because of stress, fatigue, or other issues.
You can find ways to sneak more activity into your day, whether it’s taking the stairs vs. the elevator, parking farther away from work/stores, standing up when you normally would sit, walking your dog, playing with your children, etc.
Over time, these little upgrades in your activity will pay off! So next time you’re tempted to binge-watch a season of your fav show on Netflix, break up that binge with some movement in between!
Make it an amazing day,

As I’m nearing my 40s, I need this info now more than ever. Thanks for the tips!
Sometimes in the morning, I am not so hungry so what I will do is more cardio and that way I can increase my metabolism!
I am into fitness and I totally agree to do more exercise, especially with some resistance training. It helps us to burn more calories even after the workout.
I’ve recently been learning more and more about metabolism. I thought for sure since I am older, I had no chance of recovering mine, but that is obviously not the case.
I have a desk job and you’re absolutely right, I need to move a lot more to keep my metabolism rate up…
So interesting and informative too. It isn’t easy when you have a desk job but I need to set a timer and remind myself to get up and move!
Thank you for this informative post. This post is useful for someone who is looking to boost or upgrade their metabolism. I really need to be doing more exercises. I need to increase my metabolism.
Good eating habits are the greatest solution. To form those can be challenging for some people ) your article is well written and well researched.
I have been making more effort to ensure that I move more by taking walks, walking up the stairs more as well as taking short brisk walks every hour, so this post is affirming
Very interesting to learn that our liver, brain, and skeletal muscle are the top 3 calorie burners! It was also very interesting to read the comparisons of calorie burning between an individual sitting on a couch and an individual doing chores around the house. After reading this I will definitely be more mindful about what I can be doing around the house instead of just sitting down because I’m all for activities that could potentially upgrade my metabolism into working faster!
This is really helpful, especially that I am 8-months postpartum. I need to get back in shape as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing these tips! 🙂
Great info! Since I entered my 30’s, I’ve noticed my metabolism has slowed significantly. I try to keep moving through the day and I definitely think it helps maintain my weight. When I have nights of binge-watching Netflix, I’ll turn it into a laundry day and won’t sit down while I’m folding. I really think it helps!
It is all in the metabolism yes!!! I can’t agree more. These tips are spot on, THANK YOU.
This is so interesting and informative, now I know those things that I should need and shouldn’t do. Thanks for sharing!
Wow thanks for all of the really nice information!! It’s definitely important to keep your metabolism high for good health. Great tips.
Great tips for healthy weight loss. I definitely need to get back on track!
Thank you for the insight. I’m going to do a quick walk around the block before I sit back down to work!
