It looks like 2021 is going down in history as another eventful year again!
One of the vast lessons this year has brought us is realizing how important our health is and doing whatever it takes to protect it. In today’s blog, we will be talking about the role exercise can play in staying healthy!
Working out and regular body movement is a BIG part of a wellness lifestyle. When the pandemic hit, there was also a hit in everyone’s schedule, and healthy routines got disrupted right along.
It’s time to FALL back into the fitness bandwagon because our bodies deserve it. We all deserve to feel our best!
The Journal of Sport and Health Science released an analysis of studies a while back regarding the bond between the immune system and physical activities or exercise. They rounded up many relevant scientific studies and dissected all the results to come up with conclusions.
Firstly, your immune system responds to exercise pretty quickly by revving up. Studies show that moderate to high-intensity exercise lasting less than an hour gives your immune system an immediate short-term boost.
BUT… regular exercise can provide even MORE benefits by improving not only your immune system, but also your metabolic health. Regular workouts also lower the risk of catching or dying from the flu or pneumonia.
But there’s something else you should know – moderation is a good thing! Because your immune system can take a hit if you overstress your system. This is possible if you work out too hard for too long, like an athlete preparing for a major sporting event and not getting enough rest or if you have a ton of stress going on in your life.
Life stressors can lead to not eating enough or overeating, not feeding your body healthy foods, not getting enough sleep, and beating yourself up in your workouts by overworking your body.
All of that can put you at risk of getting sick. So the takeaway is: your body helps fight off illness by doing at least 30-60 minutes of workout. It helps rev up your immune system.
The American College of Sports Medicine released a recommendation that those in normal health AND those with chronic diseases should “activate, maintain, and advance” their physical activity to 30 minutes to 60 minutes on most days of the week. They also suggested that now may not be the best time to train for peak performance.
Obviously, you should consult your doctor if you experience any health issues as a result of your workouts or if you have any concerns about your health in general.
But it’s time to fall back into fitness again along with your healthy habits. Let’s get those workouts going again!
